The three-cylinder 3YM20 Engine from Yanmar Marine is the most recent in a line of new-generation small diesels, producing 21 HP (15.3 kW) at 3,600 rpm. There are 0.854 liters of displacement. The combustion mechanism and cylinder block on the naturally aspirated 3YM20 Engine have been fully overhauled for the smoothest, most vibration-free operation. It has a vertical four-stroke and is cooled by fresh water. This brand-new unit conforms with EPA Tier 2 and BSO/SAV Stage 2 emissions rules thanks to indirect injection and a swirl pre-combustion chamber.
As standard equipment, a small control panel, an injection pump, an electronic stop solenoid, and a 60-amp alternator are provided. An 80-amp alternator is available as an option to handle higher electrical demands. The water pump, fuel filter, oil change, and dip stick are all positioned on the same side of the front of the engine, which simplifies maintenance. This engine is offered with either Yanmar’s double-seal saildrive unit or as an inboard standard model. The inboard has a servo-cone clutch with a choice of forward ratios of 2.21:1, 2.62:1, 3.22:1, plus 3.06:1. The 3YM20C version with saildrive
sports a 2.64:1 forward and reverse gear ratio with a constant mesh dog clutch. Yanmar Marine recently unveiled new 29HP (21.3kW), 39HP (28.7kW), and 54HP diesels for sailboats and smaller motorboats (39.6kW). Yanmar’s 2GM20 is replaced with the 3YM20, which has 21 HP and around 17% more power.
The Yanmar 3YM20 Engine is actually a condensed version of the stunning (I know, I’m such a nerd) Yanmar 3YM20 Engine diesel engine, which according to owner reports shares the same low vibration and exhaust smoke emissions characteristics. One of the few tiny Yanmar diesel engines that I haven’t examined on the water is this one, however Yanmar is very comprehensive with its tech specs. 3YM20 Engine
